Many wellness programs, services and activities are available to employees of University of Missouri Health Care. As a benefit to employees, the following list has been assembled and organized by host institution. University Hospitals and Clinics
"Fit for Life" - Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Fit for Life is a supervised inpatient and outpatient hospital-based service that combines assessment, progressive exercise and practical education on heart, lung and vascular disease. Specialty population exercise treatment programs are offered for secondary prevention, heart failure, heart transplantation, revascularization and valve surgery, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes and pulmonary disease. Services include cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, peripheral artery disease rehabilitation, wellness maintenance, Freedom From Smoking classes, massage therapy, healthy eating information and bariatric rehabilitation (soon to be developed).
Smoking Cessation: Several courses are offered to help you quit smoking. For more information, please contact Julie Dubrouillet at (573) 884-1312 or dubrouilletj@health.missouri.edu.
Staff Health performs health screenings; TB testing; tetanus vaccinations; Hepatitis B vaccinations for any staff member who deals with blood or blood products; and measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations. Influenza vaccinations are provided as supply allows. Vaccinations are also offered for hospital staff members who travel internationally. The office provides basic health counseling and counseling for TB-positive patients. Located in 1E41. Contact: (573) 882-2294 or robertsonde@health.missouri.edu.
University Work Injury Services offers treatment and assessment of work-related injuries or exposures and makes referrals to specialty care as needed. It handles all the labs for blood exposure as well as labs for infectious disease exposure. For repetitive work injuries, the office assists with ergonomic changes for workstations. Located at MC11. Diabetes Classes: The course "Diabetes Management! You can do it!" is designed to help patients self-manage their diabetes. It is being offered Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Green Meadows Family Practice Center, Green Team Conference Room. Instructors for the course are Melba Hall, a nurse at the Green Meadows Clinic, and Scottie Rawlings, a dietitian at the clinic. The course is free and each week covers a different topic, so patients can begin and end the course at any time. For more information, contact Ron Betz at (573) 882-9097.
Healthier Living: The six-week course "Healthier Living: Managing Ongoing Health Conditions" is offered at The Health Connection. Instructors for the course are Sandy Meskimen, a nurse at Green Meadows Clinic, and Marilee Bomar, a nurse with the Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center. Columbia Regional Hospital
Columbia Regional Hospital employees have access to a variety of wellness services and equipment in the hospital's HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center. Equipment includes treadmills, Schwinn Air-Dynes, bike ergometers, Nautilus and Pyramid strengthening machines and free weights. For more information, please call (573) 499-3278.
Missouri Rehabilitation Center
Located in Mount Vernon, Mo., the center offers a variety of employee wellness services offered for free or at a reduced rate, including: monthly educational presentations on exercise, diet, mental and social issues; massage therapy; PACE arthritis exercises; Tai Chi and aerobic classes; the 100-mile walking club; wellness walks for staff and community members; fitness consultations; exercise fitness challenges between staff teams; partnership with a local gym for reduced fee for center staff and family members, a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation gym; a nature trail; support groups for fibromyalgia, diabetes, stroke; comprehensive yearly employee health screenings; two relaxation rooms with chi machines, massage lounger, soothing music and aroma therapy; ergonomic evaluations when requested; employee sports, including a bowling league, volleyball games and softball; smoking cessation classes; weight loss sessions; and drawings to recognize staff members who have not used sick leave. School of Health Professions
The Health Connection at 1507 East Broadway, Hillcrest Hall, Stephens College Campus
is an exercise and wellness center that has a positive impact on the health and quality of life of adults in Columbia and is committed to keeping people actively connected to family, friends and community. Services include:
- Full gym and group fitness classes (morning and evening)
- Cholesterol/glucose screenings, computer class for seniors
- Blood pressure, O2 Saturday and heart rate monitoring
- Arthritis and osteoporosis education and loan library
- Travel Connections – Vaccines for traveling abroad
- Massage therapy

Missouri Mobile Health provides services such as bone density measurement, body mass measurement, pulmonary function testing, ultrasound procedures and chronic disease screenings. Contact: (573) 884-5686.
The Department of Physical Therapy provides educational programs on back care and injury prevention; exercise and comfort at the work site; and fitness screenings. Contact: (573) 882-7103 or e-mail DenbighB@health.missouri.edu.
The Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center offers arthritis education programs to community members, allied health professionals and physicians. The center focuses on quality of life issues by arthritis, rheumatic diseases and related musculoskeletal conditions through prevention, early intervention, education, service and collaboration. The Department of Health Psychology provides individual psychotherapy and wellness support for MU employees with health-related adjustment issues. Therapies include group holistic health psychology interventions (yoga and meditation) for MU employees with any stress or lifestyle-related issues. Contact: (573) 882-8847 or TTY/TDD (573) 882-7971.
School of Medicine
MU Interdisciplinary Center on Aging: The MU Interdisciplinary Center on Aging is committed to promoting, maintaining and improving health and health care delivery within a global perspective through research, clinical service and professional and consumer education. Areas of focused research include physical rehabilitation, oncology, mental health, relocation, public policy, large dataset analysis and acute illness research. Elsewhere on Campus
The Mindfulness Practice Center has been organized through efforts at the Student Health Center in order to offer mindfulness practices to students, faculty and staff. The center emphasizes a non-sectarian approach to mindfulness that draws on contemplative practices from a variety of traditions. MizzouRec MU Recreation Services and Facilities operates the Student Recreation Complex - which includes Rothwell Gymnasium, Brewer Fieldhouse and the new Student Recreation Center addition - as well as Stankowski Outdoor Recreation Complex. Epple and Hinkson fields are also managed by MizzouRec. If you would like to reserve any of these fields, please call 884-2443 on Monday - Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Forms can be picked up at the RecDesk anytime.
Campus Student Wellness Center offers FitStop to test total cholesterol, blood sugar (both a non-fasting finger-stick), percent body fat and blood pressure. Employee Assistance Program: The program strives to help University employees and their departments cope with personal, family and work-related problems. Services are confidential and free of charge. The program offers brief counseling, workplace consultation and intervention and educational programs. Phone: (573) 882-6701.
University of Missouri Campus Health Oversight Committee
- Advises the Chancellor on establishing liaison with campus groups and offices that deal with the determination and review of health care plans
- Assists in the continuing evaluation of health care plans and the dissemination of findings
- Establishes liaison with groups and offices which deal with campus health and wellness activities
Wellness Resource Center
A nationally recognized college wellness program that has various acronym components. Services include:
- ADAPT – peer education group that does presentations on wellness issues to college students and public schools
- PARTY – acts as a steering committee for various wellness fairs, such as Alcohol Responsibility Month (October) and Wellness Month (April)
- CHEERS – statewide designated driver program to provide free soda at bars to designated drivers
- BACCHUS and GAMMA – national college wellness programs
MU Counseling Center
The center has counseling services that deal with emotional wellness. Its consultation and outreach services are available for students, faculty and staff.
Community Resources
Columbia/Boone County Substance Abuse Advisory Commission
- Advises the Columbia City Council in matters pertaining to substance abuse, its prevention and elimination
- Coordinates programs to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse
BooneCounty Coalition for Tobacco Concerns
- Member of coalition for promoting healthier environments
- Developed Columbia-wide survey to assess status of smoking in restaurants
Columbia/Boone County Board of Health
- Involved in analyzing health issues in Columbia/Boone County
- Provides recommendations to Columbia City Council for Health Issues
Columbia Career Center
- Offers classes on financial wellness and office-relations wellness. MU Human Resources will pay for one class each semester
- Teaches adult-level computer classes
- Provides guidance in assisting adult students and curriculum development for each class
